Better soils for increased yield

Our soils almost all over the world need more and more help to remain fertile. The dry summers or monocultures have exhausted them and made them partially unusable for agriculture. Intelligent soil conditioners and technologically sophisticated fertilizers can be the solution.

We as EPC work as an exclusive license partner with different companies that have developed innovative and diverse solutions for soil and crop improvement.

NOVIHUM®

Innovative soil enhancer based on lignite

The company Novihum Technologies GmbH uses lignite to produce a soil enhancer that can fertilize even driest soils. Its effectiveness has been proven in more than 400 individual tests with different crops and soil types with academic institutions and commercial customers. Together with this company, we have already built a pilot plant that currently produces up to 1,000 tons of NOVIHUM® per year. The planning activities for the first large-scale plant with a capacity of up to 100,000 tons per year have already been completed. EPC Engineering & Technologies offers worldwide turnkey plant construction for this project.

NOVIHUM® is a soil conditioner that is not only environmentally friendly but also makes sense economically - both for farmers and for operators of opencast lignite mines. The lignite is chemically modified and converted into a humus concentrate. In addition, important elements such as nitrogen and carbon are added, which promote plant growth. The patented process transforms lignite into a concentrated, carbon-rich granulate that is no different from the reservoirs of organic matter found in nature's best soils and is available even in the driest regions.

Pontes Pabuli

Fertilizer from sewage sludge ashes

EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH with its new cooperation partner Pontes Pabuli offers an innovative process for phosphorus recovery. This novel technology provides a sustainable and at the same time economically feasible solution for the fertilizer ordinance, which was established by law in 2017. According to this regulation, the operators of sewage treatment plants (usually municipal companies) are obliged to recover phosphorus from sewage sludge and return it to the material cycle by 2032 at the latest. In this process, phosphate is extracted from incineration ash and recovered, from which high-quality fertilizer is produced. This standard fertilizer enriched with sewage sludge ash has a large sales market and generates calculable revenues. Furthermore, the Pontes Pabuli process impresses with its low process costs and efficient use of energy.

EPC Exclusives

Process development

We have been working with strong partners for many years to develop our processes. Renowned institutes – such as the Thuringian Institute for Textile and Plastics Research (TITK) and the Fraunhofer Institute – value their cooperation with EPC. In this way, we have built up an impressive potential for innovation. Working together with our customers, this process development has created many attractive new processes for new products. In recent years, EPC has designed and constructed a large number of research and pilot plants for various fields of application. The most recent has been the pilot carbon fibre plant at the TITK in Rudolstadt.

Simulation of critical stages in the design of a process

Simulating the crucial basic operations (e.g. reactions, rectifications, washing) of a process helps to identify and eliminate any weak points. Safety measures can be derived from the results of the simulation, and simulations also help the EPC specialists to select the most suitable technologies.

Customized plant layout

The layout of a plant depends on a wide range of constraints and conditions, for example the process requirements, the amount and arrangement of the equipment, fire and explosion protection requirements, operating and maintenance concepts, whether the plant is located in a new or existing building, open or closed architecture, and so on. In each case, EPC can develop the optimal layout for the plant and meet the customer's specific requirements. This applies to both the construction of a new plant and to the extension or revamping of an existing plant.
